Coasteering is the fastest growing Adventure Sport in the UK and we are at the forefront of its development.

Our Team have been delivering Combined Rock and Water Activities for over 15 years and have explored miles and miles of our coastline in the pursuit of finding the best coasteering venues for our customers.

We are keen to share our knowledge with other practitioners and those who are interested in the delivery of Coasteering. We are also keen to learn from all those who attend this weekend – this is a best practice workshop not a course.

We are going to have an immense time jumping off cliffs, swimming and scrambling and we are going to learn – together.

Day 2 Times: 9.00am – 4.00pm

Accommodation and catering is not included

Participants must have logged a minimum of 5 coasteering trips before joining this workshop. If you are less experienced you may be allowed to participant following an assessment of your experience and ability via telephone.

At this level we expect participants to have their own equipment but are happy to supply whatever is necessary.

Oh! Here’s a wee bit about coasteering…

Coasteering is an exhilarating combined rock and water activity that can be delivered to every individual level which makes this activity suitable for those with no fear of heights or water as well as those who may not be quite so confident.

During your Coasteering trip you will learn rock climbing and scrambling techniques as well as how to jump from great heights safely.

Wearing sturdy footwear, wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets, participants travel along a section of coastline; sometimes swimming in the sea, sometimes scrambling on rocks and jumping from rocks into the sea.

Morning and afternoon sessions are available!

The Coasteering Club is a great way to explore our coastline under your own steam and with the help of The Adventure Team.

The Coasteering Club meets on the 1^st Sunday of every month at various locations throughout Ireland – north and south!  We also run at least one trip a year to another location in the UK with Pembrokeshire high on the agenda for 2011.

Bronze Membership of the club costs £75 and includes:

Silver Membership of the club costs £120 and includes:

What is Coasteering?

For years legend has told that Robert the Bruce took refuge in on Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland during the 14^th century.

Legend goes on to tell about how he was inspired to return and reclaim his throne in Scotland by the perseverance demonstrated by a spider building a web in his hide out cave.

A recent short film has now extended the myth of ‘The Bruce’ clearly showing how he invented the activity of Coasteering.  Whilst fleeing his pursuers he worked his way around Rathlin’s coastline skipping from rock to rock, swimming through rock pools, body surfing waves and jumping from great heights into the water.

Those in pursuit were dumfounded by the antics of this Scottish daredevil and therefore unable to catch him. Realising his success Robert set up ‘Bad Bobs Coasteering Centre’ in an effort to share this exciting new activity with others.

But as usual work got in the way of having fun, Robert had to return to Scotland to claim back what was rightfully his and coasteering got lost along the way.

Until now; The Adventure Team has re-established this activity in many locations along the North Coast including Runkerry and Ballintoy and it is available for everyone to try out today.  So unless you are too busy reclaiming a country then try out coasteering this summer!

Making this film was a bit of fun with the potential to further “spread the word” about The Adventure Team and Coasteering but it must be known that there is far more to this video than meets the eye!  This video carries a powerful message about collaboration, team work, trust and helping others for no reason other than a desire to do so!

The idea to create a movie with the potential to go viral began in Gortin when Stephen Brown (Team Builder Extraordinaire) met with Jason Devine (Blackthorn Design) and Dean Langasco (I Love Monday’s).  It was shortly after they had all watched the Liquid Running video so there were loads of ideas bandied about – some crazy, some (possibly) inappropriate, some (definitely) inappropriate, some ludicrous and some with the potential to see all three in trouble (enough said).  But somewhere in the depths of this crazy talk Jason got the idea for Bad Bob’s Coasteering Centre…

The 3 guys parted company that evening and no more was said about the video until Jason forwarded a story board for the film a few days later.  From that moment on it was full steam ahead – a date was set, more volunteers were enlisted, bullied, coerced and bribed, apparently some were dragged kicking and screaming and believe it or not two of them were flown in from Canada – economy class of course (and they paid their own way)!

So on Saturday 12th June a fine array of conscripts descended upon Ballintoy Harbour to make “How Coasteering was Born!”

After many discussions and plenty of planning/training we have now taken Coasteering in Northern Ireland to a whole new level! 

As well as scrambling over rocks, jumping off rocks, swimming in the sea and body-surfing waves you can now start your coasteering adventure with a 100 foot abseil in to the sea!  And it is brilliant!

We had a group of 12 guys out on Saturday for a stag party and they loved it!

There are a few jumps right at the bottom of the abseil which are really cool and we have even worked out how to include a rope swing!  Check out the video!

We are definitely going to be lot more of this and we are also working on a few new rivers that have waterfalls for abseiling!

We hear this question quite a lot and we normally give pretty concise explanations followed with links to some recent photos and short videos – all good stuff but does it really explain Coasteering?  Probably not…  So we decided to ask some of the people that have been out with us recently and this is what we got back:

“I think the thing that makes it so appealing to people is that it seems dangerous – but we know it isn’t – for example you probably don’t do any jumps higher than 20 foot but I bet when people go home and tell their mates about it they haven’t done a jump under 40 foot.”

“Everyone should give it a go!!!!!!  Coasteering is a blast!”

“For me it was overcoming all sorts of anxieties about my fear of water and really feeling I had achieved something when I managed that  jump off the steps at the pier.”

“For me it has not only reinforced friendships, it has forged new ones as well.”

“It allows you to push your boundaries in a semi controlled environment, you know no matter how big the jump or the swell the team have your back and are looking out for you at all times.”

“I think the thing that made it work for me though was the camaraderie of the team (participants and you guys) that will stay with me. Sounds dramatic, but it really had an impact on my confidence and my trust in others. I know the next time I go I will jump in (even if you have to catch me).  Even that offer had impact – recognising that I am nervous when it comes to water but respecting that was the case and trying to help me to overcome it.  And all while having a good laugh!”

“It is exhilarating, fun and definitely blows the cob webs away!”

When these comments came in we were smiling from ear to ear.  Not just because of the praise (although that is great) but more because people were actually getting far more from the experience than they thought they would. And that is exactly what we aim to achieve.

Putting it bluntly – anyone can provide outdoors activities!  And that is where we are different – we provide opportunities for people to experience new feelings, challenge their own limiting beliefs, push their boundaries and realise that they can do whatever they want to do and be whatever they want to be.

While personal development and growth is individual the benefits apply to kids, teenagers, families, sports teams and businesses alike, in fact it applies to…. PEOPLE!
